Before You Begin: A Few Essentials
Istikhara includes a prayer (salah), so the usual conditions for prayer apply: perform wudu beforehand, and choose a time outside the three periods when voluntary prayer is discouraged, just after Fajr until sunrise, around solar noon, and just before Maghrib. Beyond that, all that’s needed is sincerity and a clear sense of the matter you’re seeking guidance on.
Step 1: Pray Two Rak’ahs of Voluntary Prayer
Pray two rak’ahs with the intention of Istikhara. This can be a standalone voluntary prayer, or combined with another nafl prayer you already pray, such as the two rak’ahs before Fajr, after Isha, or during Tahajjud. There is no surah specifically required by the hadith itself, though it is commonly practiced to recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second, as is customary for many voluntary prayers.
Step 2: Recite the Dua of Istikhara
After the prayer, recite the dua taught by the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih al-Bukhari 1162:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ. اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ.
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. You have power and I do not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”
Step 3: Mention Your Specific Matter
Where the dua says “this matter,” silently name your specific situation in your heart, whether it’s a job offer, a proposal, a move, or any other decision weighing on you.
Step 4: Proceed With an Open Heart

What If You Don’t Know the Dua by Heart?
It’s entirely acceptable to read the dua from a paper, book, or phone screen after your prayer; the dua itself isn’t part of the prayer, so reading it afterward doesn’t affect its validity. If you don’t read Arabic, reciting a translation in your own language is also valid, though many people choose to read the Arabic transliteration alongside the translation out of respect for the Prophetic wording.
How Long Should You Wait for an Answer?
There is no fixed timeframe. Some people sense clarity quickly; others need to repeat the prayer over several days. Patience is part of the process, and a dramatic sign isn’t always what to expect. Continue weighing the practical facts of your situation alongside your prayer, and trust that sincerity is what matters most, not the speed of the answer.
