Istikhara Dua for Marriage Proposal: Full Method Explained

When a proposal comes, Istikhara is one of the most commonly sought forms of guidance in a Muslim's life. Here is the full method: the prayer, the complete dua in Arabic and English, how to apply it specifically to a marriage decision, and what to do once you've prayed it.

Why Istikhara Matters Before Marriage

Marriage is one of the most consequential decisions a person makes, shaping family, faith, and daily life for decades to come. It is natural to want more than just a gut feeling before committing to it. Istikhara gives that decision a spiritual dimension: rather than relying only on your own judgment, you are sincerely asking Allah, who knows what you cannot, to guide you toward what is genuinely good.

The Full Method, Step by Step

1. Bring the matter to mind with sincerity. Before you begin, be clear in your own mind about the specific proposal you are seeking guidance on.

2. Pray two rak’ahs of voluntary prayerwith the intention of Istikhara. This can be combined with any nafl prayer, such as the two rak’ahs before Fajr or after Isha.

3. Recite the dua of Istikhara as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Sahih al-Bukhari 1162:

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. You have power and I do not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

4. Mention the matter by name.Where the dua says “this matter,” you name your specific situation silently in your heart, such as “this proposal from [name]” or “this marriage being considered.”

5. Proceed with an open heart.Continue with whichever option feels most reasonable and permissible, trusting that Allah has guided you toward what is genuinely good, even if it isn’t the outcome you originally hoped for.

Applying This Specifically to a Marriage Proposal

Istikhara does not replace the practical work of evaluating a proposal: meeting the family, asking about character and deen, seeking references, and listening to the counsel of parents or those you trust. It adds to these steps, not instead of them. Many people find it most meaningful to perform Istikhara after they have gathered enough information to genuinely weigh the decision, rather than before knowing anything about the person at all.

What If You Can’t Perform It Yourself?

If you are unfamiliar with the prayer, or your circumstances make it difficult to perform it yourself, it is permissible to ask a trustworthy, knowledgeable person to perform Istikhara sincerely on your behalf. This is exactly what our Istikhara for Marriage service offers: free, confidential guidance from qualified scholars, usually within 24 hours.
